British War Medal (1914-20), Private David William Griffiths, 4th South Wales Borderers (Died of Wounds 30th August 1917)
Born in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, Wales, in around 1884 to Mary Griffiths. He previously served in the 1st Brecknockshire Volunteer Battalion, South Wales Borderers, at some point before enlisting and worked as a collier at the time of his enlistment.
He signed up on the 17th of August 1914 and joined the 4th South Wales Borderers (SWB), which was a part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Gallipoli. He disembarked in the Balkans on the 10th of July and suffered a gunshot wound to the hand on the 22nd of July 1915.
He was sent to the depot in Gibraltar under the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (RWF) from the 13th of September 1915 until being sent to France from the 20th of December 1916 to the 29th March 1917, where he was sent back home. He was sent back to France on the 11th of July 1917, serving on the Ypres Salient with the 38th (Welsh) Infantry Division. He would have been present for the Battle of Pilckem Ridge.
He died from “multiple shell wounds” on the 30th of August 1917, 3 days after an attack on the German lines by the 38th (Welsh) Infantry Division in poor weather conditions, where they were bombarded by German artillery from the 27th of August until the 13th of September. He was buried in the Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium
