An original British-made 2-band Snider-Enfield Mk. II** rifle, converted from the 1853 Pattern Enfield Rifle, made by BSA Co. (Birmingham Small Arms Company), and dated 1866 on the lock plate. This example was supplied to the New Zealand Militia during the mid-to-late 19th century and is chambered in .577 Snider.
The lockplate is marked “BSA Co.” with “(Crown) VR” and the date “1866” as well as some inspection marks. The breech bears the unit markings “NZ / 87 / 714” over the model number vertically reading “II**” as well as typical inspection stamps. The two-band configuration features iron furniture, bayonet bar, and a full-length walnut stock with a steel buttplate. The barrel is rifled with 5 grooves, with a ladder rear sight graduated to 1000 yards.
The markings on the stock read “(Double-Broad Arrows – sold out of stores) / 2C / B / 7 – 85”, as well as the aforementioned unit markings below the tang of the barrel.
