An original and scarce cap badge of the 13th Hussars, worn during the final years of the Victorian era, circa 1896 to 1902.
Struck in bimetal, this badge features the regimental number “XIII” in white metal within a garter that reads “Viret in aeternum” (It Flourishes Forever) beneath the Victorian Crown (VR), set above a laurel wreath. A scroll below bears the regiment’s title: “Hussars” in capitals. Reverse retains the original east–west copper lugs, correct for late 19th-century manufacture.
This badge would have been worn during the 13th Hussars’ service in India and South Africa, including their notable participation in the Second Boer War (1899–1902). In 1922, the regiment was amalgamated with the 18th Hussars to form the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own).
Condition: Good – numerals slightly warped. Original lugs intact but slightly stretched.
Dimensions: Approx. 41mm x 39mm
