Description
The Austrian Zeitler 1977 (FM78 Trial Version) Bayonet with Scabbard was designed for the 5.56 mm NATO Steyr AUG (Armee Universal-Gewehr) assault rifle. These prototypes, created by Ludwig Zeitler of Vienna in 1976-77, were part of the trials for the Steyr AUG. The bayonet features a polymer grip with a socket in the pommel to engage a bayonet adapter for the rifle. Its crosspiece includes a tab that doubles as a bottle opener. The scabbard consists of a plastic body attached by four screws to a steel belt hanger with a nylon hilt strap. Although the Zeitler bayonet was not adopted, Austria later selected a simplified variant by Glock, known as the Feldmesser 78 (Field Knife 1978).
