Essex Regiment cap badge, produced as a restrike of the pattern worn between 1902 and 1959 by the Essex Regiment of the British Army. This British Army infantry cap badge displays the recognised insignia of the regiment in clear relief, incorporating the castle and key as the central device, surmounted by the Sphinx and battle honour “Egypt”, set above a scroll bearing the regimental title “The Essex Regt”. The design is simplified in accordance with wartime economy measures and is arranged in a composition characteristic of First World War period headdress insignia.
The castle and key device is derived from the arms of Gibraltar and commemorates the regiment’s distinguished service in the defence of the fortress during the eighteenth century. This pattern of badge was worn throughout the early and mid-twentieth century, including both the First and Second World Wars, and remained in use until the regiment’s amalgamation in 1959 with the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment and the Suffolk Regiment to form the 3rd East Anglian Regiment (16th/44th Foot).
Manufactured in bimetal (gilding metal and white metal) consistent with service dress wear, this restrike example provides a sharply defined representation of the traditional regimental pattern.
