An original French 75mm Mle 1897 field-artillery shell case, clearly dated 1915, offered as an empty/inert display piece. The 75mm Model 1897 was one of the more common French quick-firing field guns of the First World War; its brass shell cases are sought after by collectors and museums for their historic headstamps and attractive brass patina.
This example is of drawn brass construction with clearly struck base markings including calibre designation, manufacturer or arsenal stamps. The case mouth and rim retain correct form for the Mle 1897 service cartridge and present well for display or trench-art use.
The headstamp reads “75 DE C / F. RE. 88L. 15. X”
Dimensions
Overall height: approx. 350mm
Base diameter: approx. 87mm
Rim/head diameter: approx. 75mm
Condition
Good. The shell case is empty and inert for display. Brass exhibits an even-aged patina with toning and somewhat deep dings and marks on one side, consistent with service and age. The headstamps mostly remain clear and legible. The rim of the case mouth is slightly distorted but mostly retains its correct shape; no splits or major dents noted. Surface dings present, typical of a First World War-dated artillery case, but structurally sound for mounting or cabinet display.
