QSA Medal with the removed date on the reverse, Pte. J. Smith, Private William Avery, 3rd Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps with Laing’s Nek, Transvaal, Relief of Ladysmith, Tugela Heights and Cape Colony bars.

William Avery was born in around 1869 in Colemore, Hampshire. He served in the 1st/4th battalion, KRRC in India during the Burma campaign from December 1891 to February 1892 as part of the Baungshe expedition. He later served under the 3rd Battalion in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in South Africa, also earning the King’s South Africa (KSA) medal with 1901 and 1902 bars. He would later volunteer in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps again in 1915, being wounded twice and earning the 1915 Star, War and Victory Medal. He also served in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry during this time. He was demobilised in January 1919.
