An original and scarce example of the Suffolk Regiment cap badge, worn prior to 1902 during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Die-struck in bimetal, this pre-1902 pattern features the regiment’s early design: the 2-tower Castle and Key of Gibraltar to the centre, surrounded by a laurel wreath in white metal, with a scroll below reading “The Suffolk Regiment” in gilding metal, and surmounted by the Victorian Crown (VR). The central Gibraltar motif commemorates the regiment’s long association with that garrison, having been granted the honour in 1779.
This pattern was worn during the regiment’s service in the late Victorian campaigns, including postings in India, Egypt, and South Africa during the Second Boer War. It was replaced after Queen Victoria’s death in 1901 with a King’s Crown variant. The reverse of the badge is fitted with original east–west copper lugs, correct for the period.
Condition: Very Good – Sharp definition throughout with light service wear and patina; original lugs intact and secure.
Dimensions: Approx. 47mm x 42mm
