An original Indian Medical Service (IMS) collar badge manufactured to the 1901–1943 pattern, worn by officers of the British Indian Army’s senior medical branch. This design dates from the IMS reorganisation of 1901 and remained in service until the corps was redesignated as the Indian Army Medical Corps (IAMC) in 1943.

Description

This finely detailed badge typically features:

  • The Rod of Asclepius or serpent-entwined staff—the classical symbol of medical practice.

  • Surmounted by the King’s Crown, correct for the Edward VII, George V, and early George VI eras.

  • Die-struck construction in bronze, depending on the period of manufacture.

  • Traditionally worn on the officer’s service dress tunic collar as part of the IMS uniform.

IMS badges are significantly scarcer than those of most British Army corps due to the service’s small size and its role as a specialist officer cadre.

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 33mm

  • Width: Approx. 25mm

  • Material: Bronze

  • Fixing: Two lugs to rear

Condition

Good example with clear detail of the crown and staff motif. Light patina consistent with age; lugs remain intact and strong.
