An original First World War-era brass cap badge to the Suffolk Regiment, issued circa 1916 as part of the economy pattern series introduced by the British Army during the latter years of WWI. In response to material shortages and rising production costs, economy badges were struck entirely in brass, eliminating the use of bi-metal designs traditionally worn pre-war. This simplified version of the Suffolk Regiment badge features the familiar design: the castle and key of Gibraltar, set within a laurel wreath and circlet that reads “Montis Insignia Calpe”, surmounted by the King’s (Tudor) Crown. Below, a scroll bears the regimental title “The Suffolk Regt.”

The badge is die-stamped from a single piece of brass and fitted with a hook slider on the reverse.
