Polish Medal for Warsaw 1939–1945, awarded to honour those who defended and helped liberate the Polish capital during World War II. Instituted in 1945, this medal recognises the sacrifice and bravery shown by Polish soldiers and civilians during the Siege of Warsaw (1939) as well as the subsequent Warsaw Uprising (1944) and the liberation of Warsaw (1945).
This circular gilt medal depicts the Syrenka (Mermaid of Warsaw) holding a sword and shield, with the inscription “Za Warszawe / 1939–1945”.
The medal is suspended from an orange and yellow ribbon. It was awarded to members of the Polish Army, Home Army (Armia Krajowa), and civilians who contributed to Warsaw’s defence and postwar rebuilding.
