Imperial Saxony SG1898 a/A Bayonet in Scabbard, Dated 1902, Manufactured by R.M. Soemmerda

An original Imperial German SG1898 alter Art (old pattern) long bayonet, manufactured by R.M. Soemmerda in 1902 and issued to troops of the Kingdom of Saxony. Designed for the Gewehr 98 rifle, this pattern was later replaced by the later n/A (New Pattern). The bayonet features a long, single-edged, fullered blade with a spear point, a steel crossguard with swept quillon and open muzzle ring, and grooved wooden grips secured by rivets. The pommel incorporates the standard push-button release catch. The ricasso is clearly stamped with the maker’s mark “R.M. Soemmerda” and the spine bears the markings “GR (George, King of Saxony) / 02 (1902)” with a crowned inspection mark which is also seen on the pommel above the locking catch. Complete with its original steel-mounted leather scabbard fitted with frog stud, marked on the locket “4 GG. R. 6. 74” (4th Garde-Grenadiers, or 4th Grenadier Guards Regiment, 12th Company, Weapon Number 74).

Condition
Very good. The blade is clean with a clear maker’s mark and date, showing only minor age patina but evidence of resharpening. The wooden grip is secure, with light handling wear and bruising. The locking catch is functional. The steel-mounted scabbard is still sturdy with no visible burst stitching.
