An original British 1879 Pattern sawback bayonet, designed for use with the Martini-Henry Mk. 1 Artillery Carbine. This scarce pattern features a fullered straight blade with a serrated sawback spine. The hilt has a steel handguard with a muzzle ring and sword knot hole, paired with chequered leather grips secured by steel rivets. The pommel includes the standard press-stud leaf spring release catch. These were issued from 1879 until they were made obsolete in 1903.

The ricasso, tang, and spine carry inspection and ordnance stamps, including those of the Birmingham Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF), RSAF Repair and Enfield RSAF, with visible refurbishment dates “99”, “00”, and “01” on the ricasso, along with the double Broad Arrow indicating the item was sold out of service. Marked on the crossguard “96 RFA 51” and on the spine “W / R” (Winchester, .

Condition
Good. The blade retains its profile, with visible fullers and intact saw teeth, exhibiting a light age patina and small dark patches. Leather grips are secure, with some wear to the chequering. The locking catch is functional. No scabbard present with this example.
