Belgian Military Decoration Medal (or the Militair Ereteken in Dutch and Décoration Militaire in French), 2nd Class, awarded for long and meritorious service. Instituted in 1873, the Military Decoration was presented in two classes: the 1st Class with a chrevron for 15 years of service, and the 2nd Class for 10 years of service in the Belgian armed forces. This example is the 2nd Class, struck in gilt metal, featuring a Maltese-style cross, surmounted by the Belgian Royal Crown, with the obverse bearing the Belgian lion within a circular inscription that reads “Armée – Meritéte – Ancienneté” (Army, Merit, Seniority), while the reverse is inscribed with L’union fait la force (“Unity Makes Strength”).
