British Pattern 1859 India Pattern Socket Bayonet, complete with its original leather scabbard, and manufactured by Salter & Co. This variant was produced specifically for issue to the Indian Army’s version of the Pattern 1853 Enfield Musket, reamed for use by local units after the Indian Mutiny. The bayonet features a triangular blade with a deep central fuller and a tapered socket with functional locking ring designed to fit the India Pattern Enfield barrel, housed in its original brown leather scabbard, fitted with brass throat and chape.
The ricasso is stamped “SALTER & CO.”, along with Birmingham inspection and acceptance marks typical of period manufacture. Marked with a rack number that translates to “J:3:14”
Dimensions
Overall length (in scabbard): approx. 52cm (20.5in)
Blade length: approx. 43.5cm (17.25 in)
Socket diameter: approx. 2.2 cm (0.87 in)
Condition
Very good. The blade retains a clean, lightly patinated surface. The maker’s mark is barely legible. The socket and locking ring operate smoothly. Scabbard leather remains firm with tight stitching, showing only minor scuffs and age-related wear. The locking ring mechanism remains fully functional.
