Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) uniform button of the 1898–1901 pattern, dating to the early years of the Corps during the late Victorian period. This 24mm button features the Corps’ distinctive device in fine relief, typically incorporating the Rod of Asclepius within a crowned wreath, accompanied by the “Royal Army Medical Corps” title, all executed in brass consistent with period officer and service dress fittings.
Established in 1898, the Royal Army Medical Corps was formed to provide organised medical support to the British Army, playing a critical role during the Boer War and subsequent campaigns. The crowned design reflects the reign of Queen Victoria, placing this pattern firmly within the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Buttons of this type were worn on service and full dress uniforms, forming an essential element of regimental and corps identification.
Manufactured in brass with a loop shank fitting to the reverse, this example provides a well-defined representation of early RAMC insignia. Such buttons are collected as examples of Victorian militaria, medical corps history, and British Army uniform components.
