Original King George VI Coronation Medal, issued in 1937, an official commemorative award issued to mark the coronation of George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on 12 May 1937. The medal was awarded across the United Kingdom and the wider British Empire to selected military personnel, civil servants, police, and individuals participating in coronation events and official duties.

The medal features conjoined crowned effigies of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the obverse, with the Royal Cypher “GRI” appearing on the reverse, surmounted by a large crown, with the inscription “CROWNED / 12 MAY 1937” in two lines below the royal cypher. Around the rim of the medal is the inscription “GEORGE VI QVEEN ELIZABETH”. It is suspended from the distinctive coronation ribbon of red, blue, and white stripes representing royal and national colours.

Coronation medals formed part of a long-standing British tradition of commemorative royal awards issued to mark significant state occasions. The 1937 medal holds particular historical importance due to the circumstances surrounding George VI’s accession following the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936.
