Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) collar badges, a matched pair of the pattern worn by personnel of the Corps from 1953 through to its amalgamation in 1993. These anodised aluminium (staybrite) insignia display the Corps’ traditional device in clear relief, incorporating a shield bearing three cannons surmounted by a crown, above the motto scroll “Sua Tela Tonanti”, all set within a circlet bearing the Royal motto. The lightweight anodised finish reflects the post-war transition to practical, low-maintenance uniform fittings.
The design of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) insignia reflects the organisation’s historic responsibility for the supply, maintenance, and inspection of military equipment and munitions. The three cannons symbolise ordnance, while the crown denotes royal authority following the grant of the “Royal” title. The introduction of anodised badges during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II marked a shift from traditional brass to more durable and serviceable materials suitable for modern dress regulations.
Manufactured in anodised aluminium, this pair provides a representative example of late twentieth-century British Army insignia. Royal Army Ordnance Corps collar badges are collected as examples of British military uniform fittings, post-war insignia, and regimental memorabilia.
