South African Cape Mounted Rifles (CMR) shoulder title (1897–1913 pattern), an original military uniform insignia associated with the Cape Mounted Rifles of South Africa. This pattern dates from the late colonial period through to the formation of the Union Defence Forces in 1912–1913.
The shoulder title features the abbreviated designation “CMR” in relief, identifying service with the Cape Mounted Rifles, one of southern Africa’s best-known mounted military formations. Manufactured in brass, the title reflects the practical yet distinctive style of insignia used on colonial military uniforms at the turn of the 20th century.
Shoulder titles of this type were worn on tunics and mounted service uniforms as a visible indication of unit affiliation and formed an important element of military dress regulation. The Cape Mounted Rifles combined cavalry, infantry, and policing functions and played a significant role in frontier operations and colonial defence.
Established in the 19th century within the Cape Colony, the Cape Mounted Rifles served during several campaigns in southern Africa, including the Second Boer War, before later integration into South Africa’s military structure.
Manufactured in brass with original style attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents a distinctive piece of colonial South African militaria and mounted regiment history.
