The badge follows the traditional Royal Artillery design, featuring a detailed field gun above a scroll inscribed “Ubique” (“Everywhere”), surmounted by the King’s Crown and lower motto scroll “South Africa – Zuid Afrika”, dating it to pre-1926.
Cap badges of this type were worn on military headwear by officers and other ranks serving within South African artillery units, providing a clear indication of corps affiliation. The 1923–1926 pattern represents a relatively short-lived issue period, making original examples particularly desirable to collectors of South African militaria.
The South African Artillery formed an important component of the Union Defence Force, responsible for field artillery, coastal defence, and specialist gunnery roles. Insignia from this early period reflects the transition from colonial military traditions to a distinct South African military identity.
Manufactured in brass with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and scarce piece of South African artillery history.
