This pattern was worn during the early Territorial Force period in the years leading up to and including the early stages of the First World War.

The badge features the distinctive insignia of the Northamptonshire Regiment adapted for battalion-level identification, with the battle honours replaced by blank scrolls characteristic of early 20th-century British territorial forces. The design reflects the strong county identity of Territorial Force units, which drew their personnel from local communities.

Cap badges of this type were worn on military headwear by officers and other ranks of the 4th Battalion, serving as a visible symbol of battalion affiliation within the wider Northamptonshire Regiment structure.
