Royal Engineers cap badge (ERVIII cypher, 1936 pattern) – restrike example of British Army headdress insignia associated with the Corps of Royal Engineers during the brief reign of Edward VIII.

The badge features the distinctive Royal Engineers device incorporating the royal cypher “ERVIII” surmounted by the King’s Crown, together with the corps mottos. The design reflects the traditions and global service of one of the British Army’s oldest and most distinguished corps.

The 1936 pattern is particularly significant due to the exceptionally short reign of Edward VIII, which lasted from January to December 1936. As a result, insignia bearing the ERVIII cypher were produced for only a limited period, making original examples among the rarest and most sought-after of British military badges.

Cap badges of this type were worn on military headwear by officers and other ranks of the Royal Engineers, whose responsibilities included military engineering, fortifications, bridging, demolitions, surveying, and communications support across the British Empire.

As a restrike example, this badge has been manufactured after the original period of issue but faithfully reproduces the appearance and detail of the historic 1936 pattern. Such examples are popular with collectors, reenactors, and enthusiasts of British military history seeking representations of scarce Edward VIII insignia.

Manufactured in gilding metal (brass) with attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an attractive reproduction of a classic and historically significant Royal Engineers cap badge.
