Private William James Hayward, 2nd Battalion, Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment (Killed in Action on the 1st Day of the Battle of the Somme 1916)

William James Hayward was born in Canning Town, Essex (now London) around 1895. He lived in Silvertown, Essex (now London), and worked as a labourer in an oil works before the war.

He initially signed up on the 18th of November 1913 into the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion, Queen’s Regiment (Royal West Surrey). He then served in the 2nd Battalion, Queen’s Regiment (Royal West Surrey) in France from the 27th of October 1915. On his record, he is marked as being in the field on the 25th of November and again on the 1st of December, 1915.

He was killed on the 1st of July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme in the Capture of Mametz, likely during the afternoon/evening.

He is buried in Thiepval Memorial
