4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards (4DG) shoulder title (pre-1922 pattern), original example of British Army cavalry insignia associated with the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards.
The shoulder title consists of the regimental designation “4DG” in brass, designed for wear on the shoulder straps of service dress uniforms. Such titles provided an immediate indication of regimental affiliation while maintaining the practical and understated appearance characteristic of British Army field and service dress during the late Victorian, Edwardian, and First World War periods.
Shoulder titles of this type were worn by officers and other ranks of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, one of the British Army’s senior cavalry regiments. Positioned on the shoulder straps of the tunic, they formed an important part of a soldier’s uniform and helped identify membership within the regiment.
The 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards traced its origins to 1685 and enjoyed a distinguished service record spanning more than two centuries. The regiment served in numerous campaigns, including the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Second Boer War, and the First World War. In 1922, as part of the post-war reduction of cavalry regiments, it was amalgamated with the 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal’s) to form the 5th/6th Dragoons, making pre-1922 insignia particularly desirable to collectors of British cavalry memorabilia.
Manufactured in brass with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic piece of British cavalry history from the era before the cavalry amalgamations of the early twentieth century.
