Old Contemptibles Association lapel badge, original example of a British veterans’ association badge issued to members of the Old Contemptibles Association.
The badge was worn by veterans who qualified for membership of the association, having served with the British Expeditionary Force in France or Belgium during the opening months of the First World War. The term “Old Contemptibles” derives from the famous, though likely apocryphal, remark attributed to Wilhelm II referring to the small professional British Army as a “contemptible little army”. The soldiers proudly adopted the nickname as a badge of honour.
Founded in 1925, the Old Contemptibles Association was established to preserve the comradeship of those who served with the original British Expeditionary Force between 5 August and 22 November 1914. Membership was restricted to those who had served in the qualifying theatre during this period, making the association both prestigious and exclusive.
Lapel badges of this type were worn on civilian clothing by members at reunions, commemorative events, and remembrance ceremonies, serving as a visible symbol of their distinguished wartime service and membership of the association. Original examples remain highly collectable due to their direct connection with the professional soldiers who formed Britain’s first land forces to engage the German Army in 1914.
Manufactured in bronze and fitted with its original lapel fastening, this example represents an important piece of British First World War veterans’ memorabilia.
