Royal Green Jackets (RGJ) black anodised collar badge, original example of modern British Army insignia associated with the Royal Green Jackets.
The badge is manufactured in black anodised aluminium (anodised aluminium, or A/A) and features the distinctive regimental insignia of the Royal Green Jackets. The subdued black finish reflects the regiment’s long-standing traditions of rifle regiments, whose uniforms and insignia have historically differed from those of the line infantry through the use of darker, less conspicuous fittings.
Collar badges of this type were worn in matched pairs on the collars of service dress uniforms by officers and other ranks of the regiment. As an important element of regimental dress, they served to identify the wearer while maintaining the understated appearance synonymous with Britain’s rifle regiments.
The Royal Green Jackets was formed in 1966 through the amalgamation of the 1st Green Jackets (43rd and 52nd), 2nd Green Jackets (King’s Royal Rifle Corps), and 3rd Green Jackets (Rifle Brigade). The regiment inherited a distinguished lineage of light infantry and rifle units with service histories spanning the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Second Boer War, the First World War, and World War II. In 2007, the regiment became part of The Rifles.
Black anodised insignia are particularly characteristic of rifle regiments and are highly recognisable among collectors of modern British military badges. Their distinctive finish reflects both tradition and the practical requirements of contemporary military dress.
Manufactured in black anodised aluminium with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an attractive piece of modern British rifle regiment insignia.
