Royal Air Force (RAF) gilt officer cap badge (1953–2022 pattern), original example of British military headdress insignia associated with the Royal Air Force during the reign of Elizabeth II.

This officer-quality cap badge is manufactured in gilt metal and features the RAF’s iconic eagle surmounted by St Edward’s Crown, identifying it as the Queen’s Crown pattern worn between 1953 and 2022. The design incorporates a laurel wreath enclosing the RAF monogram beneath the crowned eagle, symbolising the traditions, professionalism, and heritage of the world’s oldest independent air force.

Cap badges of this type were worn by commissioned officers on the RAF service dress peaked cap and other authorised forms of headwear. The gilt finish distinguished officer insignia from other ranks’ badges and reflected the high standard of dress associated with RAF officer uniforms.

Formed in 1918 through the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, the Royal Air Force has served in every major conflict since its creation. During the period in which this badge was worn, RAF personnel participated in operations throughout the Cold War, the Gulf War, operations in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and numerous humanitarian, peacekeeping, and air defence missions worldwide.

Following the accession of Charles III in 2022, the RAF adopted a revised cap badge incorporating the Tudor Crown, making Queen’s Crown examples representative of nearly seventy years of RAF service under Queen Elizabeth II.

Manufactured in gilt metal with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an attractive and highly collectable piece of modern Royal Air Force insignia.
