French Croix de Guerre 1914–1916 medal with bronze star, original example of one of France’s most distinguished wartime decorations awarded for acts of bravery and distinguished service during the First World War.

Instituted in 1915, the Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 was awarded to French and Allied military personnel who were mentioned in dispatches (cited for gallantry) for acts of courage in the face of the enemy. The medal was also awarded to certain civilian recipients and military units in recognition of exceptional wartime service.

This example bears a bronze star affixed to the ribbon, signifying that the recipient was mentioned at brigade or regiment level (Citation à l’Ordre du Régiment ou de la Brigade). The bronze star is the first level of citation, with higher levels of recognition denoted by silver and gilt stars or bronze and silver palms, representing citations at divisional, corps, army, and Army Group level.

The medal features the crowned effigy of the French Republic on the obverse, while the reverse bears the dates 1914–1916, identifying it as one of the earlier wartime issues produced before the final 1914–1918 pattern was introduced. Decorations bearing the 1914–1916 reverse were awarded during the conflict itself and are particularly desirable due to their comparatively limited production period.

The Croix de Guerre was frequently awarded to members of British and Commonwealth forces serving on the Western Front, recognising individual acts of gallantry alongside French troops. It remains one of the most iconic and widely recognised Allied decorations of the First World War.

Original examples retaining their correct bronze star and original ribbon are highly sought after by collectors of First World War medals, particularly early wartime issues with the 1914–1916 reverse.

Manufactured in bronze and suspended from its original ribbon with an original bronze star device, this example represents an authentic and historically significant piece of Allied military history.

Condition

Good overall original condition, with crisp detailing and an attractive age-related patina. The original ribbon remains intact and displays light service and storage wear consistent with age. The bronze star device is present and securely mounted. Minor surface marks and signs of handling may be evident. No significant damage or repairs noted.
