King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) helmet plate centre badge (1887–1901 pattern), original example of Victorian British Army regimental insignia associated with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers.

Manufactured in white metal, this helmet plate centre features the distinctive regimental badge of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and was designed for wear within the universal helmet plate worn by British infantry during the late Victorian period. Introduced in 1887, this pattern was worn during the reign of Victoria and remained in service until 1901, making it a classic example of late nineteenth-century British Army dress insignia.

The King’s Own Scottish Borderers traced its origins to the formation of the 25th Regiment of Foot in 1689, later becoming the King’s Own Borderers and eventually the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. The regiment recruited primarily from the Scottish Borders and maintained a proud identity combining Scottish traditions with long service throughout the British Empire.

During the period in which this helmet plate centre was worn, the regiment served overseas in campaigns including the Second Boer War, where its battalions took part in operations in South Africa. Earlier service included campaigns across Europe, North America, India, and other imperial theatres, contributing to the regiment’s distinguished battle honours.

The 1887–1901 helmet plate pattern represents the final Victorian era of KOSB insignia before the introduction of Edwardian designs following the accession of Edward VII. Original examples are particularly desirable to collectors due to their detailed construction, limited period of use, and association with the iconic Home Service helmet.

Manufactured in white metal with original fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and historically significant piece of Victorian Scottish regimental history.
