Umvoti Mounted Rifles (UMR) brass shoulder title, original example of South African military insignia associated with the Umvoti Mounted Rifles and worn from the 1930s to the 1950s.

Manufactured in brass, this shoulder title bearing the initials “UMR” was worn on the shoulder straps of the service dress uniform by members of the Umvoti Mounted Rifles. Shoulder titles served to identify a soldier’s regiment and formed an important part of the distinctive insignia worn by South African volunteer and Citizen Force units during the first half of the twentieth century.

The Umvoti Mounted Rifles was raised in the Colony of Natal in 1864, recruiting principally from the Umvoti district in what is now KwaZulu-Natal. As one of Natal’s volunteer mounted units, the regiment played an important role in the defence of the colony and later became part of the military forces of the Union Defence Force following the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910.

The regiment served during the Second Boer War, providing mounted troops for operations in Natal and neighbouring regions. During the First World War, members of the regiment contributed to campaigns in German South-West Africa and East Africa, while in the inter-war years the unit continued as part of South Africa’s Citizen Force. Elements of the regiment and its successor formations also served during World War II, reflecting the continued contribution of Natal’s volunteer soldiers to South Africa’s military effort.

Original brass shoulder titles of the Umvoti Mounted Rifles are scarce and highly desirable, owing to the regiment’s long history and comparatively limited size. They are sought after by collectors of South African and Commonwealth militaria, particularly those specialising in Natal volunteer units and the Union Defence Force.

Manufactured in brass with original attachment fittings to the reverse, this example represents an authentic and historically significant piece of South African regimental history.
