Manufactured in gilt metal to officer quality, this 19mm uniform button bears the King’s Crown and Royal Cypher of King George VI, identifying it as the pattern worn between 1937 and 1953. Privately purchased by officers, these buttons were produced to a higher standard than other ranks’ examples, featuring finely struck detailing and a rich gilt finish.
The Royal Army Service Corps was responsible for the essential logistical functions that enabled the British Army to operate effectively, including transport, supply, mechanical transport, ammunition distribution, and general support services. Its personnel ensured that troops at the front received the food, fuel, equipment, and materials required for sustained operations.
During the reign of George VI, the RASC played a crucial role throughout World War II. Officers and soldiers of the Corps served in every major theatre, including the campaigns in France and Belgium, North Africa, Italy, Northwest Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. Following the accession of Elizabeth II in 1952, the Royal Cypher on military insignia was updated. In 1965, the RASC was amalgamated with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Pioneer Corps, and other support elements to form the Royal Corps of Transport, bringing an end to the RASC as an independent corps.
