Manufactured in officers’ gilt brass, this 27mm uniform button bears the Royal Cypher and Crown pattern introduced in 1902 during the reign of Edward VII. It remained in service through the reigns of George V, Edward VIII, and George VI, continuing into the early years of Elizabeth II until the adoption of new crown and cypher designs after 1952.
The General List represented personnel who did not belong to a specific regiment or corps but served within administrative, specialist, or temporary appointments across the British Army. General List officers and soldiers could include individuals employed in a wide variety of roles, including staff duties, specialist branches, and attached appointments where a separate regimental affiliation was not applicable.
This pattern of button was widely used during a period of major change in the British Army, covering the pre-First World War era, the enormous expansion of forces during the First World War, the inter-war period, and the global commitments of the World War II era. Personnel wearing General Service insignia served across the British Empire and in virtually every major theatre of operations.
The 1902–1953 pattern is particularly significant, as it represents the final long-serving King’s Crown general service button before the introduction of Queen’s Crown insignia following the accession of Elizabeth II.
