Orient Steam Navigation Company (Orient Line) button, 17mm, original example of maritime uniform insignia associated with the Orient Steam Navigation Company.

Manufactured in white metal, this 17mm uniform button was worn by officers or staff of the Orient Steam Navigation Company, better known as the Orient Line. Featuring the company’s distinctive insignia, such buttons formed part of the smart uniforms worn by officers, pursers, stewards, and other personnel serving aboard the company’s passenger vessels.

The Orient Steam Navigation Company was one of Britain’s most prestigious shipping lines, with origins dating back to the early nineteenth century. The company became internationally renowned for its luxury passenger services between Britain and Australia, operating elegant liners that carried passengers, mail, and cargo across the long route via the Suez Canal.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Orient Line developed a reputation for high standards of service and operated some of the finest passenger ships of the era. Its vessels became associated with comfort, refinement, and the traditions of British merchant shipping. The company later entered into close cooperation with Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O), with the joint P&O–Orient Line service becoming one of the most important links between Britain and Australia.

Orient Line personnel played an important role during both World Wars, with many company vessels requisitioned for military service as troopships, hospital ships, and armed merchant vessels. The line’s ships contributed significantly to Britain’s wartime maritime effort while continuing essential passenger and mail services.

Original Orient Line buttons are highly sought after by collectors of maritime memorabilia, merchant navy uniforms, and shipping company artefacts. Their attractive designs and association with the golden age of ocean travel make them desirable examples of early twentieth-century commercial uniform insignia.

Manufactured in white metal and retaining its original reverse shank fitting, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of British maritime history.
