British SLR L1A1 wooden buttstock, an original example of British Army rifle furniture designed for use with the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), one of the most iconic infantry weapons of the Cold War era.

Manufactured from hardwood, this original buttstock formed the rear furniture of the British L1A1 SLR, providing a robust and ergonomic shoulder support for the rifle. Early production rifles were fitted with wooden furniture, including the butt stock, pistol grip, and handguards, before synthetic Maranyl furniture was progressively introduced from the 1960s onwards to improve durability and reduce maintenance requirements.

The L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle was the British Commonwealth’s adaptation of the Belgian FN FAL, chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge. Adopted by the British Army in 1954, it became the standard service rifle for four decades, seeing service until its replacement by the L85A1, also known as the SA80, during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Wooden butt stocks such as this were fitted to early British-manufactured rifles produced by the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield, as well as rifles manufactured by Birmingham Small Arms and other authorised contractors. These stocks accompanied British soldiers through the Cold War and were carried during operations including the Malayan Emergency, the Aden Emergency, the Indonesian Confrontation, service in Northern Ireland, and the Falklands War.

Original wooden L1A1 furniture has become increasingly difficult to obtain, as many rifles were later refurbished with synthetic components. Consequently, surviving wooden butt stocks are highly sought after by collectors, military historians, and enthusiasts restoring deactivated or historic L1A1 rifles to their original early configuration.

Manufactured from hardwood and designed for the inch-pattern L1A1 rifle, this example represents an authentic and collectable piece of British Cold War military equipment.

Condition

Good overall original condition, with an attractive, albeit service-worn, finish. The wood displays expected handling marks, minor knocks, scratches, and wear consistent with military service and long-term storage. Original fittings are present. No significant structural damage or repairs evident.
