Private Herbert Thomas Grayston, Northamptonshire Regiment (Silver War Badge Recipient)
Herbert Thomas Grayston was born in 1890 in Ipswich, Suffolk. He married Annie Pipe in 1910 and worked as a foundry labourer before enlistment.
He enlisted on the 25th of December, 1915, initially serving in the Northamptonshire Regiment and later serving in the Labour Corps (service number 83589). He was issued the Silver War Badge while serving under the Labour Corps (badge number B108738).
Stayed in a military hospital from the 18th to the 30th of August, 1918, transferring to the Military Hospital, Colchester General, on the 18th of September until the 24th of September, 1918, suffering from “delusional insanity”. He was then transferred to the Norfolk War Hospital, Thorpe, Norfolk, from the 24th of September to the 2nd of October 1918 for “mania”. He was finally transferred to the Nottinghamshire War Hospital for “mental instability” on the 2nd of October, 1918, remaining there until the 29th of January 1919. He was discharged after this for being “physically unfit”, but notes mental instability. Presumably this was caused by PTSD or “shellshock”.
He died on the 20th of June, 1953.
