This contemporary tailor’s copy faithfully reproduces the “1877” clasp, one of the earliest campaign bars awarded to recipients of the South Africa Medal 1877–1879. Unlike modern reproductions, tailor’s copies were manufactured during or shortly after the Victorian period for wear on uniforms, display, or as privately purchased replacements when original medals or clasps were unavailable. These period-made examples are recognised by collectors as historic artefacts, reflecting nineteenth-century military outfitting and medal-wearing practices.
The original 1877 clasp was authorised for officers and men of the British Army, Royal Navy, and colonial forces who served during operations in South Africa between September and December 1877. It principally recognised participation in the early stages of the 9th Cape Frontier War (1877–1879), including operations against the Galeka and Gaika Xhosa, as well as other frontier disturbances in the Cape Colony.
The fighting formed part of Britain’s continuing efforts to consolidate control over the Eastern Cape frontier. British regulars, colonial mounted units, and locally raised forces undertook patrols, escorts, and offensive operations across difficult terrain, facing determined resistance from indigenous forces. These early campaigns laid the foundations for the wider conflicts that would culminate in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
The South Africa Medal 1877–1879 was awarded for several distinct campaigns, with individual clasps denoting the specific years or operations in which the recipient served. The 1877 clasp is scarcer than the later 1879 clasp and is particularly sought after by collectors of Victorian campaign medals, colonial military history, and British Empire militaria.
Contemporary tailor’s copies were often produced by military outfitters to closely replicate officially issued clasps for wear on mounted medal groups or display. While not officially issued by the Crown, these Victorian-period copies are increasingly appreciated for their historical authenticity and their association with period military dress traditions.
This example represents an attractive period-made copy of an early South African campaign clasp and would make an excellent addition to a collection of British Empire campaign medals, South Africa Medal clasps, or nineteenth-century military memorabilia.
