5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) Dragoon Guards uniform button, 1901–1922 pattern, measuring approximately 25mm in diameter. This is an attractive piece of British cavalry insignia associated with one of the historic Dragoon Guards regiments of the British Army.
The 5th Dragoon Guards (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) traced its origins to 1685 and served as a cavalry regiment until its amalgamation in 1922. The regiment was also known by the nickname “The Green Horse”, reflecting its long association with Ireland and the distinctive traditions of the regiment. It saw service in numerous campaigns, including the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the South African War and the First World War.
The 1901–1922 period covers the reigns of King Edward VII and King George V and includes the regiment’s service during the Boer War and First World War. The National Army Museum records other ranks’ buttons of the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) Dragoon Guards from the 1902–1929 period, as well as examples dating to the early twentieth century.
