Territorial Battalions, Royal Field Artillery (T / RFA) shoulder title, an example of British Army brass regimental insignia associated with the Territorial Force. The title combines the “T” designation for Territorial Service with “RFA” for the Royal Field Artillery, identifying personnel serving with Territorial Force units of the Royal Field Artillery.
The shoulder title is produced in brass with the lettering in an open-work construction, allowing the underlying uniform cloth to show through. These compact shoulder titles were worn on the shoulder straps of service dress uniforms and provided a simple means of identifying the arm and status of the wearer. The Royal Field Artillery formed the main field artillery component of the British Army, providing mobile artillery support to infantry and cavalry formations.
The Territorial Force was established in 1908 as Britain’s part-time volunteer military reserve and comprised numerous Royal Field Artillery brigades and other artillery units. Territorial RFA units served both in Britain and overseas during the First World War, with many subsequently becoming part of the Territorial Army.
This shoulder title is of particular interest to collectors of Royal Field Artillery badges, Territorial Force insignia, British Army shoulder titles, brass shoulder titles, WWI militaria, Territorial Force militaria and British artillery badges. Its simple T / RFA designation makes it a useful example of the insignia used to distinguish Territorial Royal Field Artillery personnel.
