48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot glengarry cap badge, an original Victorian-era example dating from approximately 1874 to 1881. The regiment was raised in 1741 and received its Northamptonshire county designation in 1782. It served in numerous campaigns during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the Peninsular War and the Crimean War. In 1881, following the Childers Reforms, the 48th amalgamated with the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot to form the Northamptonshire Regiment.
The badge features the regimental number “48” within a garter bearing the title “NORTHAMPTONSHIRE”, surmounted by a crown. This design reflects the numbered regimental system used by the British Army before the major infantry reorganisation of 1881. Intended for wear on the glengarry headdress, the badge identifies the regiment during the final years of its independent existence. Original examples of this pattern are of interest to collectors of Victorian British Army insignia, nineteenth-century Scottish-style military headdress badges and pre-1881 regimental militaria.
