South African Ordnance Corps (SAOD/SAKD) Cap Badge (1934–1938 Pattern), South African military insignia associated with the corps responsible for the supply, storage and maintenance of military equipment and ordnance. The South African Ordnance Corps formed part of the Union Defence Force’s support services during the interwar period. The bilingual abbreviations SAOD and SAKD refer to the English and Afrikaans names of the corps: South African Ordnance Department and Suid-Afrikaanse Krygsbehoeftediens.
The badge represents the specialist ordnance service of the Union Defence Force during the 1930s. Its design and lettering identify the corps and reflect the bilingual military administration of South Africa during this period. This 1934–1938 pattern is of interest to collectors of South African military badges, Union Defence Force insignia and pre-Second World War Commonwealth militaria. The pattern date is important when distinguishing this badge from later South African ordnance insignia introduced during subsequent organisational changes.
