United States Navy Good Conduct Medal, an American military service decoration established on 26 April 1869 to recognise enlisted personnel of the United States Navy for exemplary conduct, professional proficiency and faithful service. It is one of the oldest continuously awarded military decorations in the United States and was originally introduced to encourage discipline, good behaviour and the retention of experienced sailors. The medal has undergone several design changes since its introduction, reflecting the evolution of American naval uniforms and service award regulations.
The standard modern design features a bronze-coloured medal bearing the historic ship USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) surrounded by a fouled anchor and a circular chain. The reverse bears the inscription “FIDELITY · ZEAL · OBEDIENCE”. The medal is suspended from a dark red ribbon. The medal is of interest to collectors of United States Navy decorations, American military awards and naval history
