The Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm is a military decoration associated with the former Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), established on 15 August 1950. The Gallantry Cross recognised acts of bravery and heroic conduct during combat against enemy forces. It became one of the most widely recognised South Vietnamese military awards of the Vietnam War and was also presented to allied military personnel and units supporting the Republic of Vietnam. The palm device denotes the highest level of organisational citation, at the armed forces level, in the unit-award system.
The medal features a cross with four flared arms, crossed swords and a wreath between the arms. The central circular medallion depicts the outline of Vietnam between two palm branches, beneath a scroll bearing the inscription “QUOC-GIA LAO-TUONG”, translated as “Reward of the State”. The reverse has a similar cross design with a plain central disc. The red ribbon incorporates a broad yellow central stripe divided by narrow red stripes, while the palm device identifies the associated award or citation. The decoration is an important collectable for those specialising in South Vietnamese medals, Vietnam War awards and foreign military decorations.
