Regiment East Rand cap badge, representing a South African Army armoured infantry regiment established as a Citizen Force unit on 1 January 1960. The regiment was based in the East Rand area of the Transvaal, with its headquarters associated with Benoni and Germiston. Its distinctive regimental insignia was approved in 1960 and worn from 1962, identifying the unit during its service under the South African Defence Force and subsequently the South African National Defence Force. Regiment East Rand was later renamed OR Tambo Regiment, with the 2022 date marking the end of the pattern covered by this listing.
The cap badge is manufactured in bimetal, combining gilt brass and silver plating to create a contrasting regimental design. The badge was also worn as collar insignia and is associated with the unit’s armoured infantry role. The reverse is fitted with two screw posts and retaining nuts, as used for attachment to military headgear. This South African Army badge is a useful addition to collections of South African Defence Force insignia, Citizen Force badges and twentieth-century African militaria.
