Army Pay Department mounted officer’s uniform button, dating from the period 1902–1920. The Army Pay Department was responsible for administering military pay, accounts and financial arrangements throughout the British Army. Its officers provided an essential administrative service during the Edwardian period and the First World War, supporting the expansion and operational requirements of the Army. The department underwent several organisational changes during this period, becoming the Army Accounts Department in 1905 before reverting to its former title in 1909. In 1920, it was amalgamated with the Army Pay Corps to form the Royal Army Pay Corps.
Manufactured in gilt metal, this small 14mm mounted officer’s button features the departmental insignia incorporating a crown and lion, surrounded by the inscription “ARMY PAY DEPARTMENT”. The mounted, domed construction distinguishes it from the larger standard uniform buttons and reflects its use on officers’ dress. This scarce departmental pattern is an interesting example of British Army administrative insignia and is suitable for collections of military buttons, corps and departmental uniform accessories, and First World War British militaria.
Dimensions: Approx. 14mm diameter.
