Basutoland clasp face for the Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal, produced as a contemporary tailor’s copy. The clasp relates to colonial military operations in Basutoland, now known as Lesotho, during the nineteenth century, when forces from the Cape Colony were involved in maintaining colonial authority and responding to regional conflicts.
The Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal was awarded for qualifying service in various campaigns in southern Africa during the nineteenth century. Clasps identified the particular operations for which recipients qualified, making them important components of campaign medal groups associated with the Cape Colony, colonial forces and frontier warfare.
This example is identified as a contemporary tailor’s copy rather than a modern reproduction. Period-made copies and replacement medal components are of interest to collectors of Victorian campaign medals, South African military history, colonial campaign awards and nineteenth-century medal manufacture. The clasp face is suitable for display or research alongside a Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal collection.
Condition
