An original Belgian Order of Leopold II, 1st Class, awarded for distinguished service to the state and Crown. Established by King Leopold II in 1900, the Order of Leopold II was conferred in both civil and military divisions and across several grades. This 1st Class example is the Gold Class Medal, manufactured in gilt metal. The medal shows the shape of the Order badge imprinted in a metal shape that is vaguely octagonal and looks like a closed florian cross, with a central medallion bearing the Belgian lion within a circlet inscribed with the motto “Unity Is Strength” in French (L’union fait la force). The reverse shows the crowned monogram of Leopold II.
