Royal Flying Corps (RFC) officer’s uniform button of the pattern worn between 1912 and 1918, representing one of the earliest forms of British military aviation insignia from the First World War period. This small-format button features the classic RFC device in fine relief, incorporating the King’s crown above the initials “RFC”, all executed in a gilt finish typical of officer-grade uniform fittings.
The Royal Flying Corps itself played a pioneering role in military aviation prior to the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918. Officers’ buttons of this type were worn on service dress and full dress uniforms, forming part of the detailed and highly regulated insignia of early twentieth-century British military attire.
Manufactured in gilt with a shank fitting to the reverse, this 17mm example provides a well-defined representation of original First World War-era uniform hardware. RFC buttons are collected as examples of early aviation memorabilia, British military insignia, and First World War uniform components.
