An original Belgian Yser Medal 1914, awarded to Belgian soldiers who fought in the critical defence of the Yser Front during the opening phase of the First World War. Instituted on the 18th October 1918, the medal recognised those who served in the Belgian Army between 17 October and 31 October 1914, when Belgian forces halted the German advance by flooding the Yser plain—an action that preserved Belgian independence and stabilised the Western Front.

The obverse features the helmeted male figure of Victory, bearing a lance, symbolising Belgium’s steadfast resistance with the date “17-31 OCT 1914”, summounted with the relief inscription “YSER”. The reverse displays the relief image of the left side of a roaring wounded lion lying on the bank of the Yser river, with an arrow in its left shoulder, below the lion, the relief inscription “YSER”, in the medallion, the Belgian royal crown over the relief letter “A”, the monogram of King Albert. This example retains its correct bronze finish and is fitted with the original pattern ribbon in yellow with three central black stripes, representing both Belgium’s national colours and mourning for the fallen.

A historically significant piece awarded only to frontline defenders of one of Belgium’s most important wartime battles.
