An original British Elwell 2987 billhook with a 10-inch blade, produced by the well-known edge tool manufacturer Elwell. Billhooks of this type were standard-issue for military engineers, pioneers, and field units, as well as being widely used in forestry and agriculture. This example features the classic heavy, single curved-edged, curved blade with a squared back and hooked tip, marked on the blade with the Elwell name and pattern number 2987. The round handle is of hardwood, peened and riveted at the end of the full tang.
