Essex Regiment Bandsman’s pouch badge, featuring the Eagle of the French 62nd Regiment de la Ligne — symbolic of the Essex Regiment’s gallantry at the Battle of Salamanca (1812) during the Peninsular War. Worn by bandsmen of the Essex Regiment on their full dress pouches, it depicts the captured Napoleonic eagle standard, a trophy taken by the 2nd Battalion, 44th Regiment of Foot (later part of the Essex Regiment), from the French 62e Régiment de Ligne. Cast in gilding metal, the eagle is shown perched on a pedestal with the number “62”.
